How to submit an image to the Image Inspector

The tool only works with direct image URLs (e.g., links ending in .jpg, .png, .webp, etc.).

Obtaining direct image URLs from various platforms can be challenging due to platform restrictions, privacy settings, and the nature of content delivery. Here’s a practical breakdown by platform, noting whether and how you can get such URLs — especially on mobile where it’s trickier.

Platforms That Don’t Provide Direct Image URLs

  • Messenger: Images are behind login; dynamic URLs, often expire
  • Instagram (App): No way to extract direct URLs
  • WhatsApp: Media is encrypted, images are not hosted on public URLs
  • Snapchat, BeReal, Threads, Telegram, iMessage, Signal, Discord, Twitch: Most of these use encrypted media delivery or temporary file links.

Platforms Where Direct Image URLs Are Sometimes Obtainable

  • Facebook, Instagram, Twitter: On the desktop version, click on the image to open it, then right-click and select “Copy image address” to obtain the direct URL. On mobile, open Facebook in browser not via the app, tap and hold on the image and select ‘Copy image address’. No direct URL access from within the app.
  • Reddit: Open in browser, tap and hold on the image and select ‘Copy image address’. Some subreddits host images externally (e.g., imgur), which makes this easier.
  • Pinterest: Open in browser, tap and hold on the image and select ‘Copy image address’. You may need to follow the link to the external site to get the actual image file.
  • LinkedIn: Most images are dynamically served, and URLs expire or require login.

Workarounds:

  • Use a Desktop Browser (preferably Chrome or Firefox).
  • Open platform in browser (not app).
  • Right-click / Inspect Element on image to find actual URL.
  • Paste that into your tool.
